With just 3 ingredients, this dragon fruit smoothie is so easy yet packed with vitamins. And even though dragon fruit seems exotic, you can use those frozen dragon fruit cubes found in the freezer aisle of most grocery stores.
There’s just something about a tropical smoothie that tastes like it was made from the fruit you got at a roadside fruit stand in Hawaii. And while I can’t get fresh Hawaiian dragon (a.k.a. pitaya) fruit quite as easily or cheaply in Colorado, we can buy the frozen cubes from Target!
You’ll love this dragon fruit smoothie
- It’s super easy to make with just 3 basic ingredients. Smoothie recipes are ideal for highlighting these fun ingredients (because have you SEEN the color of this smoothie??)
- Dragon fruit is high in antioxidants which my nutritionist self loves for keeping the immune system in tip-top shape.
- It’s hydrating thanks to dragon fruits’ 84% water content. It’s basically nature’s Gatorade. Some even call it a superfood!
Ingredients for A Smoothie with dragon fruit
Smoothies don’t need to be complicated to be delicious. My 3-ingredient spinach smoothie, 3-ingredient pineapple smoothie, and mango smoothie are proof of that.
- Dragon Fruit: Frozen dragon fruit is best for smoothies because frozen fruit makes it super thick and creamy. You can either buy store-bought frozen (usually with white flesh) or learn how to cut dragon fruit (white or pink) and freeze your own.
- Banana: If you don’t have or like bananas, feel free to use plain or vanilla yogurt.
- Milk: Dairy-free milk (like almond milk or oat milk) or cow’s milk all work great. Coconut milk is one of my favorite options!
Smoothie Enhancers
You can pump up this dragon fruit smoothie recipe by adding seeds like chia, flax, or hemp. You can also add nut butter (cashew butter is great for this smoothie!), protein powder, or a leafy green like kale or spinach.
How to make a dragon fruit smoothie
Alright this is a long one, ready? Write this down:
- Blend everything together until smooth.
Sarah’s Tip
The milk in a smoothie will vary based on your other ingredients and how thick you like your smoothie. For example, if you use a banana in this smoothie, you’ll need more milk than if you substitute the banana for yogurt which has more water in it. Start with a smaller amount of milk and add a little more as needed to achieve the desired texture.
Storage
Storing smoothies is tricky. Here’s the best way I’ve found.
- Fridge: Leftovers can be kept in the blender in the fridge for up to 2 days. When you want to enjoy them, reblend with a little ice.
- Freezer: You can also pour leftovers into ice cube molds and freeze them. When you want to enjoy it, let them soften on the counter for 5-10 minutes then reblend with a little milk or water.
Recipe Testing Notes
- Frozen dragon fruit: I tested this recipe with both frozen dragon fruit and fresh dragon fruit + ice. Both were fine, but the issue with ice is that as it thaws, it makes the smoothie watery and causes the fibrous ingredients to separate a bit.
- Yogurt vs. banana: I tested the smoothie with both yogurt and banana. I prefer banana because it’s a bit creamier and has natural sweetness, but yogurt adds a little protein. I did find that I preferred a sweetened vanilla yogurt over a plain. Basically…your pick!
VITAMIX BLENDER
This is the blender I use and adore!
It’s a smoothie party!
I’ve been known to have themed parties and a smoothie brunch has really been on my mind. Picture this, ingredients to make a variety of smoothies, instructions for how to make a great smoothie, and all the best vegetarian brunch recipes. Here’s what I would make (or have friends bring):
- This Key Lime Pie Smoothie is a must for the party because it has tropical flavors to pair with dragon fruit.
- A Passion Fruit Smoothie would complete the array of colorful smoothies (pink, green, and yellow), and add another tropical fruit smoothie to the mix.
- Carrot Lox is another colorful option and is a brunch classic turned vegetarian.
- And my absolute favorite breakfast recipe, Healthier Huevos Rancheros would have to make an appearance at this smoothie party.
Or make these into dragon fruit smoothie bowls! To do this, use only a splash of milk so it’s nice and thick and then top with your favorite granola, chia seeds, fresh strawberries, and a drizzle of honey.
